Comments:
I was on duty in the old control tower in 1968 when the quake hit Misawa and a T-33 pilot questioned why the runway was moving. We made a couple of emergency broadcasts and closed the field to all traffic. We rode it out a few minutes, then the emergency lighting pack jumped off it's shelf. That was enough and we hustled down the metal stairwell (run down three steps get bounced back up one or two). All three controllers on duty exited safely only to find the entire RAPCON crew yelling for us to get out (like we could hear over all the other noises at the time). The book that we lost had some very interesting pictures of the bottom Hachinoe Bay and then the tsnaumi flooding everything and putting ships on to top of the dry dock buildings (I think that was 15 to 20 feet above a normal high tide. A lot of Aomori was also flooded by the waves as well as anything along the beach. We were operating out of mobile control tower for a long time after the quake.

Between photo lab duties and my hobby of ham radio, I was aware of "the hill". I really enjoyed my time at Misawa. Coming right out of high school and spending 2 years in Japan was a fantastic learning experience. I never got to go there, but have talked with a number of people of the years who were there after I was, so I got to keep up on the doing there. I have great memories of that special part of the world, and really enjoy reading the memories of others too.

So many great memories of my tour in Misawa I don't know where to start. Had my first child "made in Japan". Made so many good friendships I feel that I have a second huge family, it was just quite a unique experience. I would love to return some day and see all the changes in the last 37 years or so. One of my fondest memories being base football champions-GO NAVY!! Again I would like to say that my time in Misawa is something I will cherish forever.

I was asked a few times to check this site out from friends in the past but never got around to it. Turns out to be a great site and it certainly brought back happy memories. I'm still in touch with about 20 old Security Service and ESC people now. I live in the Philippines now (for last 10 years). I was married to a wonderful Japanese lady from Hachinohe for 25 years before she passed away in 1998. Now married to a fine woman from the Philippines. Have a great son, 36 y/o and a beautiful daughter, 4 years old. Heading back to the states in 2 more years for good and will start my 3rd and final leg of traveling around the world for the final few years. Keep up the outstanding website. Take care to all the past and present Security Service members. Brad

Misawa changed my life. I was a member of the Naval Security Group and you guys really out-numbered us.

I knew a lot of people when I was there, Japanese and military. I lived off base. I remember a sailor and his girlfriend that I visited often. They seemed to be a perfect couple. One day, Tiahaco came to me and said where is Steve. He had received discharge papers and left the day before.

When I told here this, I could see her heart was broken. That night, she overdosed on some pills and knocked a candle over in her house. She burnt to death. And Steve will never know.

This haunts me to this day. I told myself that I would make up for it somehow. I did, as before I left I married a wonderful girl named Sumiko (Yoko) who worked in the Florence.

We were married 38 wonderful years until she just passed away last February. Now my heart is broken and I know it ever will be the same.

Misawa stated as an assignment, became a magic that can never be replaced and gave me the most important treasure I will ever have - my Sumiko.

God Bless all who served and the entire community of Misawa that were our temporary family away from home.

Worked in MCPA/P with another two ASA members and two NSG Navy members. Our section was eventually sent to be colocated at the 6988th in Yokota, Japan. There I went TDY to the 6924th SS in Da Nang, and later to Cam Rahn Bay. Many fond memories of Misawa. In fact my present wife was later to be stationed at the USAF Hospital there in Misawa, about 30 years later.

I have fond memories of my tour to Misawa! Because I was still quite young, I raised a little hell from time to time! But, I remember bowling, softball, cross country sking, exploring the caves, playing the slot machines at the static club, raiding the old farmers corn field behind the barracks and building a fire to roast the corn, the machi, the josans, driving to lake towada, riding the trains and getting bombed on saki, going to the cherry blossom festival and going different places with our house boy. I remember the chow hall was great, especially on the mid shift! I remember waking up one morning with a inch of dust all over the bed from a wind storm we had. I remember being on a mid shift when the lights at the compound started swaying back and forth from an earth quake! Probably a lot of you have the same memories!

One of the best assignments anyone can have. NCOIC of SS and Base Photo Labs.
Visiting town like Towada,Hirosaki Castle. The town of Misawa itself, all the eateries around.
From Misawa we went to Foreign Technology at Wright Patterson AFB, then to Hanscom AFB, Ma. Where we retired from the USAF in 1975.
Would do it all over again ( except for one year in SEA ) if we could.

My daughter-in-law has asked me to do a little research about her paternal grandfather, Delbert L. Gosser. He was also known by Del and Deb Gosser. As near as I can tell he was a pilot in WWII, Korea, and was still active duty in 1962. He died in an airplane crash on January 5, 1962 at Misawa, Japan. But I don't know if he was stationed there or flying in from another base. Does anybody remember that plane crash or serve with Gosser? You know what they say--it's a small world. My son was in the Air Force and served at Misawa in the early 1990s.

I really enjoyed my tour in Misawa and seeing some of the old pictures of AP Alley, the '68 earthquake, etc. brought back a lot of memories. I do remember that Trick 1 dominated the interflight sports leagues and I have a unique patch that says "Trick 1-Triple Crown Winner, Softball, Basketball, Football 67-68". Some of the things we did (good and bad)while I was there will stay with me forever. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that I knew there, drank and caroused with. That time has gone by quickly--oh, to be young and foolish again.

Just happened upon this very interesting site, I was looking for information on the 68 earthquake. I lived in Misawa with my parents first during elementary & junior high then the last time was after highschool. As a young adult living there I remember alot of the hangout/bars that I saw in the photo galleries. I also worked in the BX and thouroughly enjoyed working with the locals and learning their culture. I hope to go back to Japan some day to visit, after viewing the recent pictures I can see that alot has changed. Thank you to those of you that have put this site together.
