Thanks Dutch ... spoke with my Dad after I signed yesterday. It's really interesting to see all the folks who served and loved Misawa. My first CC there in 96 was stationed with my Dad back in the day. He ended up pinning my AFCOM medal from Osan on me and told me he knew my Dad, I would never have guessed it. There actually was a picture in the CC's hallway of the Misawa Snow Festival from '86. My Dad's group made the Alamo and someone actually took a picture of my Dad working on the snow sculpture (in the dark with lights on but I recognized the red snow suit). It was surreal but cool to know things like that are out there. The good times I had in Misawa and the camraderie I saw with the folks my Dad worked with helped me make the easy decision to go into the AF and ESC. It's not quite the same anymore but I was lucky enough to work with a ton of folks who knew/worked with my old man. As a matter of fact I'll be visitng with Ron Lightfoot in Yokota in about two weeks for a conference. It's a tough job but someone has to do it!

Comments:
Loved my time as a kid there with my folks ... followed in Dad's footsteps and became a 202 in '89. Finally got stationed in Misawa in 96 - 99 after my tour at Osan. Had one hell of a time but most of my buddies are now the old guard or retired. Me, I'm still going, 18+ yrs in the AF, and trying to get back to the only place I consider home other than San Antonio, TX! I would love to show my wife and kids what a great place Misawa was and still is! Still the AF isn't willing to send an old prior E like me to Misawa so we'll see in December.

Guestbook Administrator's Comment:
[DutchNote: Best of luck on making it back to Misawa for another tour, Shawn. Your dad, Mike, started his tour 20 years after I PCSd back to the States. The changes must be overwhelming.

BTW, your dad signed this Guestbook, too - back on 18 Sep 2007 (Rec # 987) in case you'd like to see what he said.]

Wow, what a cool site. So many memories that I have forgotten over the years. I remember A1C Cara Richey, A1C Jim Northamer, SrA Lisa Tom (She was hot!) and who could forget SrA Tod Woodfill. That dude helped me learn about drinking, passing out, puking, getting in trouble and much more! Would love to catch up with some of the old friends I've lost touch with, great fun to chat up the old days when I had energy, women were interested in me (If Todd wasn't around), and I could just blow all my money on whatever seemed like a good idea that week.

The memories are flooding back. The alley, the Thirsty Thirteen, back to back mids (couldn't do it now!) all the friendships. Had a great time in Japan. Went to Udorn Thailand from Misawa and then finished up at Pease AFB in Portsmouth N.H. returning to civilian life in June of 1973. Sorry to hear that the USAFSS has been disbanded. When did that happen?

Guestbook Administrator's Comment:
Helen Note: Not disbanded, renamed! In 1979 the Security Service became the ESC (Electronic Security Command). Then it was the AFIC (Air Force Intelligence Command); then the AIA (Air Intelligence Agency); and recently changed to AFISR (Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. There is a comprehensive web-site for all alumni of any of these agencies at www.ftva.org.

You know what just came to mind. I know someone has to have the famed picture of the Elephant Cage. I remember my dad bring it home and it was a big elephant trying to get out of the cage. Someone out there has to still have it. I know if i could show my father that he was laugh. I know some of you reading this are laughing.

Guestbook Administrator's Comment:
Helen Note: Yeppers, we have one! FYI there are only 2 elephant cages now.

My father Ronald P. Kindred started out our tour in Misawa in the 6920th if i remember right. I know he was a TSgt and when we left he became Fisrt Sgt of the 432nd Supply i believe. I know I had some really good times there in Misawa. I remember as a teenager taking the bus up the the Hill gettting Pizza on a friday night with my best friend Todd Vaughn. I remember keeping score for all the guys softball games. I can even remember the crazy softball tournaments we had in the middle of winter. Come on guys you have to remember that. I remember beign able to go swimming in the middle of winter in our indoor heated pool. LOL. I remember the crazy a** hill leading down to what they called a beach. Many Many trips to Lake Towada and after there was a typhoon anywhere near us we use to do to the beach to look out for the prized glass balls. Took lots of those home to the states. The base has lost alot since then from what I have seen. It use to be a small place now it is huge with to many people. Take care drop me a line if you know my dad and I will pass it on. markakindred@yahoo.com

Names like Bill Strickland, "Scotty" Scott, Sue Garner, Ken Neff, Holt Summers from my second tour. Impossible to name everyone but who could forget "BJ" no second name required. Will try to contact everyone in the next few days. Anyone remembering me is more than welcome to contact me. My e-mail address is: rkccwc@sbcglobal.net. I had a wonderful time at Misawa. My roomate Don Carruci had a car (50's Chev) so we went to Lake Towada and many other places.

I had a car (360 cc Koni, 35 mph flat out!) the last year I was there. Lake Towada in all seasons was my favorite destination.

Traveled by train to Hokodate, Aomori, Sendai, Sapporo and many more on weekends. Took a 30 day leave in 68 and traveled to Tokyo, Ustsunomia (JASDAF buddies home, Takzuo Aoki), Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto.

Do any of you remember the 6989 th pig roasts? PM's on R 390's?

The USS Pueblo was captured while I was there. I may have wrestled Dwayne Hodges from Creswell OR in high school. He was the only one killed in the attack.

With the Misawa Reunion in San Antonio starting this week (06.05.08) and as I am unable to attend, I was looking for additional ways to get back in touch. I very much enjoyed the time in Misawa, work and play. It was my second tour to Japan, as I was there in 1953-1956 at Johnson AFB, as a dependent. I was very young and left with few of my own memories. Misawa made up for the memories. Most interesting people, exciting work, sandy times search for glassballs (still have a few), day trips to Lake Towada. My Hachinnohe horse is still here on display. I would do it all again, well most of it....
Be well,
Paul

Spent only four years in the Air Force; my last tour of duty was at Grand Forks, North Dakota (very bleak surroundings). Worked 38 years for United Parcel Service and spend time between my home on Long Pond, Lakeville, Mass and my winter home at Plympton, Mass. I have two daughters and one son and I am a Grandfather 8 times and holding!! Keep busy ice fishing, traveling to my time share in Aruba and causing trouble in the neighborhood. Just attended a small reunion in St Louis with James E. Overman, Milton Jendry and Herb Souza.

Loved Misawa as the climate was very much like my home state of Massachusetts. Upon returning from Japan, I was sent to Lowry Field in Denver to complete my tour of duty. Then I worked for Zenith Sales Corporation for three years then applied and was selected to work in Human Resources - Department of the Navy where I received training in various facets of Human Resources Management. I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1997, after completing a total of 37.5 years of combined military and cilivian service. No complaints, only joy! Would love to visit Misawa someday before I am too old to travel. My best to all!

A great friend and Misawa vet died recently of cancer in April 2008, Jane Gerth aka Janey. We spent two tours at Misawa and one at RAF Chicksands together attending many movies, musicals, tours and spending many evenings talking. As Bronco Bayless stated earlier this week, "Janey was a better person 30 years ago than I am today." I concur with that statement and I will miss her and our conversations. I am happy in thought knowing she will be in a better place and that I had a chance to speak with her before she passed away. Janey.... I will miss you.

Of a less sober note. Cheri Howell (Merchant), it is good to see you on the board. I always wondered what happened to you. I hope life has been grand for you. :)

I'm glad to find this site. I am hoping to see some familiar names from the time that I was there. I remember great football games, great skiing, plenty of bo-fry and having to send a lot of stereo equipment and china back to all of the relatives. Assigned to 6921st straight from Keesler and spent a little over 3 years at Misawa in the cold, dust, mud and beer. Married and lived off base for about 2 years. Our oldest son still bears the tag "Made in Japan." Great sight and it is good hearing about old friends. Getting ready to retire from education and have spent the last 11 years as principal of an alternative school. Not a great deal of difference in the students we have and those who were on Trick 3.
