Loved my time at Misawa! I was the permanent day shift entry controller at Wing Ops on the hill. Hung out with Dave Littleton who worked in Ops, can't remember which trick anymore. We both toured all over Honshu and Hokkaido, he on his '75 Yamaha 650 and me on my '75 Kawasaki 750 (still have it!). Made a few trips to Tokyo, Kyoto and Soporro on these bikes. My boss, 1LT Charlie Gregg (oldest 1LT in the AF-former MSGT) and I took a bike trip (he rode a red '77 Honda 750-SS), down to Yokota and Tokyo and hit many bars down that way. He spoke fluent Japanese and knew every back alley in Tokyo like the back of his hand. Somehow he managed to have 11 years of assignments in Japan, when I started working for him. The Chief, Security Polce was a young Capt named Emory Toops. Some of the SP's I remember working with were: Nelson Strother, Dirk Rogers, Jim Reed, Tom Mulligan & Bob Riley. The Wing Commander was a great guy named Col. Lester Mellot; Base Commander was a former SSgt named Col. Robert Edgren, another good guy as I recall. Made it back there once in 1981 on a SAM aircraft that I was a Security NCO on out of Andrews AFB, DC., and saw a few of my old co-workers. Managed to reconnect with a few people from Ops in 1987 when I was assigned to the 6915 ESS, Bad Aibling Station, Germany. USAFSS was such a close-nit group of good people, will always have super memories of those years.

Traumatic experience for an ignorant Arkansas country boy.
USS Gen A E Anderson ship ride (sea sick before we got to
the Golden Gate bridge) to Yokahoma, then a nasty two day
train ride to Misawa. Got Selected for TDY to Det 2, Wakkanai
Dec. 1954(det.troop total pop. 90, including the AC&W det.)
Began snowing on my arrival, froze all the fish on the drying
racks and the "honey buckets and benjos" at the Japanese villiage on the beach across the road from the det. and sure improved the
smell of the enviorment. The snow was headlight deep on the "weasles" on the beach. One winter and frozen plumbing was enough for me, I "rotated" back to the squadron at Misawa in Aug. 1955. Anybody reading this recalls/remembers me "drop-me-a-line",I'll tell George McKenzie, he lives just across Missouri
line and we visit/talk.

I remeber Airman Tibbs, my trainer, Bill Kress and our houseboy Tachi and the Catholic chaplin, Fr. Menze (sp). Enjoyed snow, Tori Twirlers was a squardance club. Locals were great. I learned to motorcycle all thru nothern Honshu, tried mountain climbing and other outdoor sports. Great memories.

I was the first AFSC 751X2 to be assigned to Misawa who had an active SIR clearance.
I worked at Base Personnel and also spent a lot of time on the Hill at DOUT. I hope someday to find Angie, Mike, Steve, Dale, and the rest of a great gang of dedicated, yet "parting" group of people. I enjoyed my assignment a lot. I retired on 1 Jan 1992, going on to serve 20 years with the US Customs Service, finaly retiring from the US Customs & Border Protection, Dept. Homeland Security in 2009. I spent my off time working as the personal bar-back for the famous Mike Bobbinets at the NCO Club. During my tour, I know that I met every single person at Misawa.

When I arrived in Misawa in October 1966 Misawa was a 2 year tour, but I loved Japan and traveling the country so much that I voluntarily extended my tour. Because I loved traveling so much I eventually became the Trick 4 "Tour Coordinator". I also started and managed the "Trick 4 Snack Bar" where we sold sandwiches, candy, etc., with all profits going to Trick parties and other Trick social events.

Most memorable Dawg Flight buddies are Milt Adams, Bob Smiley, Rodney Fender, Jerry Yeager and, of course, Sgts. Britt and Harrison.

Msgt.Gary Drane of the Water Walkers, Tsgt. Greg Davis, Lt. Litchy (and her name rhymed with..) CMSGT Casteneda, Maj. Feldman, Mike Fenech, Rosie, Tim. Those folks made a great impact on my life. There were others but their names escape me now; I blame it on old age. I remember the dedication of the F86 when the microphone died during the commander's speech, erecting the antenna outside the shop...not very succesfully the first time. Ah, yes, the good old days.

I went to Misawa from the 6984th Sec. Sq., Shemya, Alaska. I worked with a number of helpful people. Among them were 202's, such as Sgts. Akeo, MacArthur, Jefferies/Jeffers, etc. Many 203's,such as Swan, Pellitier, Conley, and Sgt. James were helpful, too. There were a number of knowledgeable 292's in areas 1 and 10 as well. Hopefully, "D" Flight pulled its weight in the intelligence community.

Originally, I am from just south of Terre Haute, IN. and an ISU grad. I just retired from 40 yrs. of school teaching, Gr. 6-12 in souther IL. near the IN border.

I had not planned to return to Japan, but my family and I returned in Dec., 2011 in order to visit our son in Shiojiri, near Matsumoto-Nagano, just W and NW of Tokyo. He teaches Eng. in the JET program therein.

If anyone cares to talk about "old times," my family and I still live in the Wabash Valley of southern Illiana. cell: 618-554-7795 or the e-mail herein.

Misawa was "Home Base" & I only once got lucky enough to do TDY there -- That's wheare I bought "Garrard Lab 80" turn-table (record player) -- It still plays today! I was one of those CRYPTO Guys there at AFSS Wakkannai -- not exactually paradice with 238 average inches of snow fall per-year But in the end; good training for a later assignment at TULE AFB Greenland -- No Snow There - Just Ice Crysiticles & Cold. But there I did earn a Track-Masters Liciense. I was then AFSC, AFSCF & maybe 1/2 dozzen others. Anyway I was still a SPY - Only a spy-in-the-sky. Ha! That's great! Something I tell my Childen one day -- But its CLASSIFIED! Oh well!, I'm in my late 60s & have nothing to say. I can say, CRITI-COM - Oh! the North Korians just borded the "Peoblo." & theose Navy Idiots hadn't practiced "Emergancy Destructio Procdures," & KW26s were commendered!

I've been paging through the guestbook look for people I knew and hoping that they would check back. Found Dave Debusman, whom I visited in Kansas when he was in college after we were discharged. Found some other names I remembered - Buzz, Lurch, Jeff, Herk and Del Muth from North Dakota. Looking for Larry Thompson who was from Dayton Ohio, and Dave who was from Wisconsin. Hard to beleive it has been 42 years since I left Japan. Remember flight trips to the Cherry Blossum Festival, the trip up to Saporo. I have great photos I've looked at lately and sadly cant remember many of the names of the guys I spent so much time with. I remember AP alley and the many hours spent there. I owned a Subaru Zanbar, a mini-mini van with Larry Thompson and we would bring many guys back to the base from AP alley. I also had a Honda 250. My room mate when I got there from Karamursel Turkey was a guy named Dana. I then got a single room upstairs across from the bathroom - remember having to keep my door locked at night to keep the drunks from peeing in my room by mistake. Weird the things one remembers and can't remember names. I remember Buzz who kept having to have wedges added to the back of his pants. I remember a Native American guy from OK who was a good friend but I have no idea of his name. If anyone remember me I would appreicate a mention.

spent most of my time in Wakkani. 54-56 was not a well developed site. A large tower field and two small connected buildings. The winters lasted until the short spring and summer. Nice town with nice people. Misawa (the town) was more truly a town supporting a military base, where Wakkanai was independent of the base and had its own economy.

Lucky, outside POL gate was the landlord. A few great parties held at the abode. Great times at Y77, Koshiros to name a few. Gold Club in Aomori was really nice. Being in entertainment allowed us to travel, and getting to represent "The Hill" and Misawa at PACAF Talent Contest 1978 (for Tops in Blue), Clark AB, Philippines and on to Worldwide. Met some great ops (Don Martell, George Cartagena, Tom Brack), analysts, supes, flight commanders too. As the band Chic would sing, "Good Times. These (or those) were some good times."
