To all who served in Misawa, it is very nice to hear your stories an experiences while you served.

Guestbook Administrator's Comment:
[DutchNote: Thanks so much for checking in! I see your own Misawa tour is roughly 20 years past. Hard to believe, isn't it?
For the real low-down on Misawa history and happenings, I recommend you acquire a copy of CMSgt. Babb's book HONTO! (available on this site under the BX Bookshelf). It's a compilation of stories, events and photos he gleaned from our member-only website. It's definitely a journal of Misawa days long gone.]

I recall that I arrived at Misawa not too long after some earthquake wreaked havoc on the security group operations center.
Unfortunately I do not remember any names of the guys I worked with there.
I had my two year tour there interrupted as expected to go 2-T to a "remote" location so I opted for Wakkanai and spent the last 15 months of my military experience there.

My fellow 202 was Mike Reynolds and our OIC was Lt. Daniel Fink. Worked with George Gazaway, Bill Lotze, Frank Ginty, Kenny Daniels, Barry Nuss, Frank Collins, Andy Anderson, Robert Quinn, Carl Nevin, Charlie Olds,Eddy Boss, and a host of other good men.
Unfortunately Lotze, Ginty, Collins, and Olds have passed away.
Think Nevin was planning on retiring there. Does anyone know if he did and where he might be found? Also does anyone remember an Air Policeman who worked the gate into our complex by the first name of Robbie (sp) from Lubbock, Tx. He was a short stocky guy.

At the meeting I met a gentleman that was a Flight Commander at Wakkannai during the period 1965-1966. HIs name is Dave Frank. I have asked Helen to invite him to join the Misawa Project as he told me he has many friends that were at Misawa.

Had terrific time while stationed at Misawa. Over the years, have lost contact with many buddies/friends stationed there in the early 60's. Attempted several times by extending my tour for a chance for a consecutive overseas tour to Germany. After Misawa, arrived at Goodfellow and eventually had two tours to Germany and finally back to Goodfellow in 78. Every election year BRAC in on the table and it looked as if GAFB would close all operations in 1980. So, guess what? I had put in my paperwork to retire and the base remained open. Would have stayed in longer if I had only known that Goodbuddy would stay open and Lowry ended up getting the axe. Retired from USAF, the City of San Angelo and now completely retired just wondering where my next move may land me. Maybe 6 feet under but not soon. To all my friends out there, give me a holler sometime if you can. Yes, I'm originally from the Mountaineer state (WV). Shift work, playing pool with my friends and dragging our bods back from AP Alley were the good ole days.

I was born to Sakai Shoji (dob 10/20/33) at Misawa, Japan on November 23, 1964. I was adopted to an American USAF and his Japanese wife. I am looking for anyone who might have known my birthmother. She also had 2 boys, James Monroe dob 3/29/56 and Yoshimi b 7/9/61. They were both adopted to American families as well.
Did you or anyone you know date Sakai Shoji in 1964? I only know she may have worked selling cigarettes at the NCO club.

Could there be a better place to be? Been to Pakistan, Hawaii, England, Florida, and Texas.. If I could go back, Misawa and England would be 1st places... Played fastpitch (SS & Catcher) for the Dawgs.. Archery Club (I was there when the first Compound bow came in)... Crawled AP Alley once or twice (can't really remember if there was a 2nd).. Was a member of the Motorcycle club... Great golf course which I disgraced many times with my Hacker Self's presence.. Almost got shot by JASDF guards at OPS during construction in '72 (trying to take a shortcut during a motorcycle outing). Lived in on-base private housing (trailer's)... Went to the '72 Olympics. Our "hotel" room was great... had an icicle 3' long hanging inside the window!!! I remember once being slammed by some dude from the day shop about how I wasn't running Wideband "by the book". "Those 3 guys at Goodfellow are the experts on this system, and they spent a lot of time putting this book together. You need to make sure you follow it to the tee.." I loved the look on his face when I showed him the signature page on that guidebook and that one of the three names on it was mine!! I loved it!! That Captain couldn't get out of the section fast enough!!!! Memories!!! Ya gotta love it!!

Forgot to include my wife (Adele) in my entry (#8340). As I said in that initial entry we had a great tour (with the exception of the fire and quake).

Adele worked as a GS type civilian for the Chief of Maintenence (On the flight line) she took inflight emergencies, etc and......here I was the Air Force member with NOTHING to do with the flying part of the USAF, Ha!

So I joined the Misawa Aero Club and got my Private Pilots license in one of the 1959 Cessna 150's. Pulling out onto the active runway at Misawa was like pulling out on I-80 in DesMoines and looking toward Omaha! My solo cross-country (more than 100 miles and return) was to Sendai....the same airport that was under water from the terrible Sunami in 2011.

We could not wait to take baby Paula home to the States and show her off to all her cousins.

We were usually attached to the USAFSS (as I was in Bremerhaven- 6913th RSM). At Misawa however, we were "listed" as part of the 439th Combat Support Grp. We were in that small building on the man-made hill as you rounded the WEST end of the runway and entered the 6921 wing near the lake.

Good duty....we lived both on and off base and upon arrival we purchased a house near the POL gate (R-100) We sold R-100 to a Lt.that had just arrived with a new fighter grp..... Later we lived in base housing near the water tower. We were able to move on base right away because of the concurrent overseas tour time. My daughter was born at the AF Hosp. on Misawa. We experienced the downtown fire.....and the earthquake. We are still picking plaster out of some books!
